Dear Senator Gillibrand,

I am writing with deep concern — your efforts to support cryptocurrency through the GENIUS Act put communities across New York State and the entire country at risk, prioritizing the wealth of a few ahead of the public good.

While most New Yorkers and Americans see zero benefits, cryptomining’s negative impacts are widespread. Cryptomining today accounts for up to 2.3% of our national annual energy consumption — it puts a severe strain on energy grids, drives up utility costs, pollutes and disturbs our air, water, and neighborhoods, and has a massive impact on our climate. These secretive cryptomining operations also tend to target rural communities.

You claim to be an advocate for rural Americans — for that to be true, you must pull back your support for the GENIUS Act, which will further promote cryptocurrency and cryptomining. New York communities from Seneca Lake to North Tonawanda, and rural communities across the country, will not soon forget this bill.
